Mohamad Al Khaiat has been crowned Qatar’s 2015 & 2018 king of drift.

Cars In Doha have caught up with Mohamad Al Khaiat. He is referred to as one of the ‘greatest drifter in Qatar’ and we couldn’t wait to hear a little bit more about him and about his experience and passion for drifting!

In the 2018 Qatar Redbull CPD competition,  Mohamad Al Khaiat stacked up 358 points in his savvy BMW F22 Eurofighter ( Custom made ) and Shifts gears for gold to hold the title for the second time to win the title of ” Qatar’s King Of Drift”. He qualified to the Next Redbull CPD competition that will take place in Lebanon during September 2018.

Q1- AS WE KNOW DRIFTING IS AN EXPENSIVE SPORT, WHAT BAD THINGS CAN DRIFTING DO TO YOUR CAR?

Only if there is an accident can it become expensive. As the body, suspension, engine, or even the whole car could flip over and wreck the car. Check the picture below to see the result of the last accident I had ‘followed by a huge bill to repair the car’

Q2- CAN A FRONT WHEEL DRIFT JUST AS WELL AS REAR WHEEL DRIVE?

100% No. You can do a burnout and a skid with the handbrake but you cannot drift. You can try but it will look silly. As a professional drifter I will not suggest drifting in front wheel drive.

Q3- CAN YOU DRIFT WITH A TANK? AND HAVE YOU TRIED IT?

No and I haven’t tried it. I think Top Gear might have. But of course drifting with a car is not the same as a military tank. [Maybe one day – why not].

Q4- TELL US ONE OF THE BIGGEST OBSTACLES YOU’VE FACED WHEN YOU WERE LEARNING TO DRIFT?

Drifting is the type of sport that needs good skill as many other sports. For me the biggest obstacle was the hand brake and gear stick because the handbrake is in a different position and it took time for me to get used to it.

Q5- DO YOU COUNT DRIFTING AS A DANGEROUS SPORT AND WHY?

It’s not dangerous at all as you are drifting in a closed area and its prepared encase there is an accident. Also the car is very safe as it has a full roll cage, fire extinguisher and kill switch on the outside of the car which shuts down the power to the car.

Q6- DO YOU HAVE A TEAM OF PHYSIO TRAINERS LIKE OTHER SPORTS?

No but if someone wants to start, it would be good to get one like any other sport.

Q7- REGARDING YOUR DRIFTING CAREER, IF THERE WAS ONE THING YOU COULD HAVE DONE DIFFERENTLY IN THE 2017 CPD, WHAT WOULD IT HAVE BEEN?

Learning from 2017 CPD, I should have been more relaxed and focused in order to not make any mistakes and win the competition. Saying that I always learn from my previous mistakes.

Here’s a video from 2017 Competition if you’d like to know what CPD is like. “Video Credit: Mk Racing Team”

Q8- WE KNOW YOU HAVE BEEN USING THE BMW F22 EUROFIGHTER “CUSTOM MADE” FOR THE LATEST CPD COMPETITION, APART FROM THAT WHAT IS THE BEST CAR BRAND TO USE IN DRIFTING WITHOUT APPLYING ANY EXTRA WORK ON THE ENGINE AND THE CAR BODY?

You cannot just use any street car for drifting. There are 2 things you must have in your car. Extra angle and a hydraulic handbrake which is not available on any production car. For example you can buy a BMW M4 manual gear box and just modify the 2 things I mentioned and then you can drift. Also the Mustang Shelby is a good car to drift with, Nissan Z350, Camaro SS. All should have the hydraulic handbrake and the angle should be modified.

Q9- WHAT OTHER FAMOUS INTERNATIONAL DRIFTERS DO YOU ADMIRE AND WHY? HAVE YOU MET WITH ANY?

Daigo Saito the Japanese drifter. I met him at one of the drift events called King Of Nations. Also James Deane I met in Qatar and his skilled are incredible. He enters events around the world with great results he is definitely someone I admire in the drifting world.

Q10- WE HAVE HEARD IN THE 2018 CPD IN THE LAST ROUND THEY CALLED YOUR NAME AND THE JUDGES GAVE YOU 5 MINS TO TAKE UP YOUR LAST ROUND, WAS THERE ANY REASON WHY YOU TOOK MORE TIME WAS YOUR CAR FACING ANY PROBLEMS BACK THEN?

We faced an issue with the cars alternator but we managed to temporarily fix it within the extra time allocated. We put a charger in the back of the car to give it power as a temporary fix which was risky, as at any time while drifting it could have disconnected leaving the car without power. At the time of this issue we really thought we would be out of the competition but we had the luck by our side and we won.

Q11- WHAT DO YOU TELL CARS IN DOHA FOLLOWERS IN ONE MESSAGE IF ANYONE WANTS TO TAKE UP DRIFTING?

Go ahead, you will have no regrets. You will really enjoy it.

Q12- AS YOU ARE THE KING OF DRIFT FOR THE QATAR 2018 CPD AND YOU HAVE QUALIFIED TO CHALLENGE OTHER PARTICIPATORS FROM THE MIDDLE EAST IN LEBANON. WOULD YOU BE USING THE SAME CAR “BMW F22 EUROFIGHTER” FOR THE COMPETITION? AND WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING DIFFERENTLY TO TRY AND WIN THE COMPETITION?

I will be using the same car to enter. Once I get the engine back from the US we will try to practice as much as we can so that we are relaxed and prepared to do our best in “the” Lebanese competition “which we hope to win”

“Thank you Cars In Doha”
